Stradivarius, singing saw

Stradivarius, singing saw

It is unclear who first turned the saw into a musical instrument - woodcutters in the Appalachians, in the Ozark Mountains or in Sweden. Since the beginning of the 20th century saws have been used as music instruments have been produced and played in these regions. The tool's handle is clasped between the thighs while the left hand holds the end of the saw blade. When the blade is bent in a slight s-shape and a violin bow is drawn over the back side, a high tone emerges that can be altered via the tension of the saw blade. When starting out, the musical saw will sound pitiful and whiney, but with a little practice one can coax eerily beautiful glissando melodies from the saw. Our saws are manufactured out of cold-rolled hardened steel in the forgeries of the Swedish firm Sandvik. Each instrument is tested in the factory by a "violinist". Most virtuosos in the world play the "Sandvik Stradivarius".
